Mom tells the kids they're screwed

Question 1:

Bill Johnson tells the story of how one year, his family had to overcome a terrible tragedy on Thanksgiving day. Bill says "I'm glad it was Mother, rather than me, who had to break the news" to the kids. What awful thing had happened?

The kids are shellshocked, as Mom tries to explain the situation. As if on cue, Father conveniently walks in to his family in shambles. He quickly changes the subject to what we should be thankful for. "Your life, sure" be thankful for that, but also..

	People don't celebrate our American, blessed-by-God, holiday			They'd shoot you between the eyes for looking at somebody the wrong way

	In some countries, you have to get along without everything else we are used to

That night, the kid's weren't just playing, they were thinking about what they were thankful for. Tom was thankful for plenty of food and free public libraries. Susan was thankful for clothes, and that she caould choose to attend?

Dick, the oldest son, had his own reasons to be thankful.
He's happy he can get an education where schoolbooks are studied instead of burned. Mother is happy to see her kids grow up, but is especially thankful for?

Mr. Johnson, or 'Dad' as he likes to be called, has so many things to be thankful for. He recites the entire list, but which of these truly reaches beyond his life and family, to encompass the entire globe, in one big bear hug?

	Somehow, someway, the unity we've got here in the Johnson family will someday spread to men and nations throughout the world			For knowing a knock on our door means nothing to fear
